How do we use the past modal, should have?

There are a variety of English grammar patterns that are tested on the TOEIC® exam. In Part V and Part VI, you may be asked questions about using should have.

Should means it's a good idea.

  1. When you come to NY, you should go to Central Park.

Should have talks about the past.

  1. I should have gone to Central Park means, it was a good idea, but I didn't do it...and I regret not doing that.

We use should have to talk about regretting something you did or didn't do. By the way, In everyday American English, we usually pronounce should have as 'SHo͝od ə

  • I should have gone to Central Park.
  • I should have woken up earlier. I got to work late and the boss was angry.
  • You should have studied for the exam. That's what you didn't pass it.

👉 Keep in mind the best way to remember this grammar or any grammar or vocabulary in English is to take the word or phrase, write it in a sentence that's true for you or true in your world, and then memorize your sentences.

👉 You can even take your sentences and write them in the comments below. I would love to see your examples.
